Phantom Summer by Amy Sparling

Seventeen-year-old Taylor Gray moves to Sterling Island to get over her dead boyfriend. Mom’s cool with letting her crash on the couch, but Taylor needs to get a job before the lights are cut off again.

When the tall, dark and crazy Raine Tsunami offers her a position at his thriving ghost tour business, she figures it’s an easy way to make some cash. Taylor isn’t afraid of ghosts--that crap is as fake as her mom’s boob job. She loves their adventures on the historic island, especially the secret places he shows her when the crowds go home. So what if all the ghost stories are just legends?

When Taylor comes face to face with a ghost and Raine crosses the line between friend and boyfriend--Taylor’s new life collides with her haunted past. If murdered people end up as ghosts, then that someone she was trying to forget is probably trying to find her.

~Book Review and Giveaway: None of the Regular Rules~

None of the Regular Rules by Erin Downing
Publication date: November 20th 2012
Genre: YA Romance/Coming-of-Age

Sometimes, a few dares can change lives…

The weekend before the start of senior year, Sophie Erickson and her best friends, Ella and Grace, discover a handwritten list of dares tucked away in the glove compartment of Sophie’s beat-up old Toyota. But this isn’t just any list; it’s a dead girl's bucket list.

Sophie's beloved aunt Suzy died as a teenager in a fatal fall, leaving Sophie with an overly cautious family, a few fading photographs, and a bucket of bolts that barely passes for a car. But now, Sophie has Suzy’s list of the things she wanted to do in her last year of high school. Sophie can't help but wonder: What would happen if she tried to fulfill Suzy’s last wishes, to live out the longed-for life of her aunt, her hero?

As Sophie and her friends attempt to knock off the things on Suzy's list of dares, love blossoms in unexpected places and Sophie begins to feel that her life is finally coming together...when in fact, everything is slowly unraveling around her. When the truth about a long-held family secret threatens to shatter everything she believed to be true, Sophie is forced to question everything she knew about the life and people she believed in, and ultimately herself.

MY REVIEW:

It is the weekend before senior year for Sophie and her best friends Ella and Grace.  Hindered by a flat tire, they discover a bucket list left by Sophie's Aunt Suzy in the glove compartment.  Sophie loved her Aunt Suzy who died ten years earlier.  The list really gets Sophie to thinking about her life and what is important.  To honor Aunt Suzy, the three friends are going to attempt the items on the list to honor Suzy.  Friendship will be tested and family secrets may be revealed as they embark on this journey.  That is enough to deal with without adding regular high school drama to the mix.  Then there is Johnny, the handsome, hunky next door neighbor who Sophie has admired from afar, even though she won't admit it.  With everything thrown into the mix this makes for one unforgettable book.
.
None Of The Regular Rules is a really good teen book.  It describes the high school years perfectly.  How many teenagers have parents who don't understand them?  This is a refreshing YA contemporary and flows smoothly  I recommend it to everyone.

“My top pick of 2012 YA… This book is just. plain. fun.”
~Jordan McCollum, author of Saints & Spies and I, Spy

“Sariah Wilson's new book, The Ugly Stepsister Strikes Back, is hilarious…What follows is a story of fun and romance with some good non-preachy life lessons thrown in.  The voice in the main character, Mattie, makes the whole thing.  I thought it was definitely a book I'd recommend to anyone with teenagers or who just want to read a good teen romance.”
~Julie Coulter Bellon, author of All Fall Down and All’s Fair

“Sariah [Wilson] has written one of the funniest stories I've read in such a long, long time. I literally couldn't put it down. Yes, my poor Kindle's battery died and I was attached to a short power cord, contorted in a very uncomfortable position while I read to the end…. Sariah Wilson captured the back-biting, insecure, hormone-driven, clique-riddled high school atmosphere so perfectly you'd think she never grew up. I dare you not to laugh as you read this witty and oh, so, romantic story.”
~Debra Erfert of Windows into Writing

“Sariah Wilson writes like the best of/most popular YA teen fiction/teen romance authors - Sarah Dessen, Jennifer Echols, Susanne Collins, Cassandra Clare.  She sucks you in and never lets you go.  I finished the ~194 novel in one night because I just couldn't go to sleep without knowing the ending!  I hope that Sariah comes out with more novels, I know I'll be re-reading this one all the time!  She's extremely talented and needs to be talked about.  I highly recommend The Ugly Stepsister Strikes Back! to anyone (over the age of 12) who wants a YA novel that's a real modern-day fairy tale.”
~Hilary at Novel d’Tales

“This was such an entertaining story! I shouldn't have started reading it so late in the evening, because I didn't want to put it down to go to sleep…This is a book I can see myself reading several times. It's a fast, clean read with great characters, and I highly recommend it.”
~Andrea of Literary Time Out

The book is wonderful.  It’s quirky and fun.  The story makes you laugh and you fall in love with the characters right from the beginning…This is a well-written book.  It is one that will make you smile and sigh as you remember your first love.  And it has a moral…be yourself, believe in yourself and maybe, just maybe, your fairytale will come true.  Pick up this book.”
~Ana of The Book Hookup

MY REVIEW:
What a cute, fun book.  A different and unique spin on a classic fairytale.
We have always heard the story of Cinderella but we have never heard it told from the stepsisters point of view.  How does it feel growing up with the perfect Ella who can do no wrong?  Ella has it all and she really deserves it.  She is nice to everyone, even her stepsister, Mattie.  She has the perfect boyfriend, who Mattie is secretly in love with.  Everything comes easy for Ella according to Mattie.  Mattie just wants to be noticed for once in her life.

Sariah Wilson has written a wonderful book with some wonderful characters.  You will fall in love with this series.  You won't be able to help it.  I look forward to reading more and finding out what happens to these lovely people after the drama called high school.

~Book Blast and Giveaway: Baked Alaska~

Baked Alaska by Josi S. Kilpack

An Alaskan cruise is the setting for amateur detective Sadie Hoffmillers latest adventure. Sadie plans to spend time relaxing with her two grown children, Breanna and Shawn, and her boyfriend, Pete, while enjoying the luxury and cuisine of an elegant cruise ship and helping to plan her daughters upcoming wedding. But even as the crew prepares to leave port, Sadie has suspicions about the voyage ahead and the relationship between her normally easygoing son and a mysterious female passenger he obviously knows but refuses to discuss. When the woman is discovered unconscious during the second night at sea, Sadies apprehension escalates. Over the last few years, Sadie has developed an extreme dislike for secrets and it would seem her son is keeping one from her. *Includes eight new mouthwatering recipes, tested and approved by the official bakers of Sadies Virtual Test Kitchen.

Praise for Baked Alaska
Josi Kilpack has done it again. You would think that all these events that occur in Sadie's life wouldn't be natural, but Josi Kilpack has a way of making you believe that it just "happens" and it is normal. I have grown to love Sadie's character, even if she is a busybody, you can't help but cheer for her as she attempts to solve a mystery or crime. One of my favorite series. :)

~Book Reviews: Flight and Focus by Alyssa Rose Ivy~

Welcome to my blog.  Today I am going to review Flight and Focus by Alyssa Rose Ivy.  Thank you to AToMR Tours for hosting this book tour.  Be sure and check out my reviews and follow the rest of the tour HERE.

Flight:  The Crescent Chronicles (Book 1)
Alyssa Rose Ivy
A summer in New Orleans is exactly what Allie needs before starting college. Accepting her dad’s invitation to work at his hotel offers an escape from her ex-boyfriend and the chance to spend the summer with her best friend. Meeting a guy is the last thing on her mind—until she sees Levi.

Unable to resist the infuriating yet alluring Levi, Allie finds herself at the center of a supernatural society and forced to decide between following the path she has always trusted or saving a city that might just save her.
MY REVIEW:
Allie and Jess are going to have the perfect summer before starting college.  Headed down to New Orleans they are going to work for Aliie's dad in the beautiful hotel he has just purchased.  Allie just wants to live it up and have fun.  A perfect plan until she meets Levi.  He has his sights set on Allie and he is not going to give up easily.  Levi is keeping some dark supernatural secrets from her.  When Allie finds out she is excited and intrigued about this secret society.  Allie soon finds out that Levi has no plans on letting her go and will even use deceit in order to keep her close.
I love the New Orleans backdrop for this book.  What a creepy and beautiful city.  The hidden paranormal world is believable without being over the top.  Allie is funny and flirty and just looking for fun.  Levi has a different approach to their relationship and can be a little arrogant at times.  The chemistry between the two will knock your socks off.  I have read many books by this author and enjoyed this one very much.  This is a wonderful quick read that I recommend to anyone.  I am looking forward to reading the second book in this series.

Focus:  The Crescent Chronicles (Book 2)
Alyssa Rose Ivy

Freshman year of college is hard even when you're not tied to the future king of a supernatural society.

Allie dives into college head first with Hailey as her roommate and the city of New Orleans as her backyard. As things within The Society heat up, Allie realizes that whether she’s with Levi or not, she's in far too deep to turn back.

MY REVIEW:

Allie is starting her freshman year in college.  She has decided to stay in New Orleans and enroll in Tulane  instead of going to Princeton.  Levi is hoping that Aliie will forgive him and they can move on in their relationship.  Allie has not forgotten how badly he deceived her.  As charming as he is, Levi is going to have to wait and earn back her trust and forgiveness.  Allie has to keep up a good facade, though,  Levi's parents and the rest of the Pterons think they are a real couple.  Allie has to be careful now with her new status.  There are plenty of people who will go to extreme measures to keep her and Levi apart.  Will Levi always be there to protect her?

Allie is a strong independent girl and I am so glad we get to see more of this.  She is not a pushover anymore.  I know, I know that Levi worships her and treasures her and is always there for her.  Myself, I can't get over how BADLY he deceived her into mating with him.  That is the only reason why I am not enjoying this series as much as I should.  He should have told her the truth upfront and not relied on deceit.   The chemistry is once again smoking hot.  A wonderful YA Paranormal that flows smoothly.  I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

Excerpt: I feel Colt laugh, and he looks down into my face. That’s when he seems to realize what I’ve been acutely aware of for the last several minutes—our bodies are pressed together. “It’s awesome, yeah?” he says. “Adrenaline rush.” “Yeah,” I breathe. “I guess.” I’m not sure if he’s going to kiss me until he does. His mouth covers mine, and energy mixes with the alcohol flooding my body. Our tongues slide together, and I grip his shirt so I don’t collapse.  Every single bit of this is wrong, and there’s no way I’m stopping it. It’s back, that good feeling. The sadness has been pushed out again, and in its place is this rush, this rush of adrenaline like Colt said.  He pulls back and smiles at me. “We’re going to start dating. Now. You’re my partner in crime.”

Excerpt

Blu Tara stared her sister in the face. ‘Let me tell you what you don't know about love, Gamma. It is a curse. You will scoop out your core and abandon it just to have the Being that you love. You will steal another person's life force if it makes it easier to get it. You will abandon the world you have been cradled in, betray everything and everyone you care for. You’ll give up your name for it.’

Blu Tara's voice went soft and dreamy. ‘You will gladly close your eyes and embrace the world of darkness. You will kill or die for it. And you will hate yourself for the weakness that it brings on you. So don’t talk to me about love.’

Gamma shook her head. ‘You're not making sense,’ Blu Tara. ‘You talk as if... I’m the one who should be upset about all this.’

Blu Tara lifted her hand dismissively. She pointed a hot finger at Gamma. ‘Anyway don’t forget what we are.’

'And what are we?’ Gamma glared at her..

'Different. Strange. Something to be frightened of. Two Beings that can fuse and burn everything to ashes. That's the way they all see us down there. That's what the Stardog wants from you - the powers you possess.

‘I hate them all. With their suspicious, shiny faces and their empty games. I hate that Voice which drones on and on at us in the Learning Dome as soon as we've finished resting.

Innoverans! All those perfect, pretty Beings; they remember nothing — it’s the curse of this shallow, shining world. Tell me, Gamma - what do you remember of the world we come from before your Odors Apeno dumped us here?’

Gamma swung around to face her sister fully. ‘Blu Tara! What's got into you? Where’s all that coming from? I've never heard you speak like that before. This is about Krave and I- not you!’

Krave and you - don't make me laugh. And, oh! Here’s a big difference — between you and I this time, Twin Sister. It’s the answer to your question that you brought me up here to ask.’ Blu Tara mimicked Gamma's soft and musical voice, Why do you want to kill Krave?

Here's the answer, Gamma. I will do whatever I have to do to save myself. I'm the half of you that's not like you. I don't have a weeping heart. Now I'm out of here. I need my Rest.

~Book Review: Pieces and The Breakaway~

Thank you so much for stopping by today.  I will be reviewing two books by Michelle Davidson Argyle.  Be sure to read my reviews of these wonderful books.  Follow the rest of the tour for more reviews and some great giveaways.
PIECES
Rhemalda Publishing
February 14th, 2013

Two years after watching her kidnappers go to prison, Naomi Jensen is still in love with one of them. Jesse will be released in a few years, and Naomi knows college is the perfect distraction while she waits. But when her new friend Finn makes her question what is right and what is wrong, she begins to wonder if Jesse is the one for her … until she discovers he's out on parole. Naomi must sort through her confusion to figure out where love and freedom truly lie—in Finn, who has no connections to her past, or Jesse, who has just asked her to run away with him.

Pieces is a companion to The Breakaway and can be read independently, if desired.

PURCHASE AT:     AMAZON     BARNES & NOBLE

MY REVIEW:
The Breakaway tells Naomi's story about her kidnapping and what she had to endure.  In Pieces we learn about the aftermath.  It has been two years since Naomi sent her kidnappers to jail.  She is trying to move on with her life but one of the kidnappers, the one she fell in love with, is getting ready for parole.  Naomi is anxiously awaiting his release because she naively hopes for a real relationship with him.  Can their love be real?  How will people react when Naomi wants to start a relationship with her kidnapper?

Naomi is trying to settle into normal college life at Harvard.  She is getting along well with her roommate and has made a new friend in Finn, the cute coffeehouse guy.  As long as people don't know about her past, she can relax for a bit.  She agrees to go out with Finn only with the understanding that they are just friends and she quickly lets him know she has a boyfriend.  Only, she doesn't tell him her boyfriend is in jail.  Even from jail, Jesse still has a strong hold on Naomi.  When Jesse is finally paroled, the only way him and Naomi can be together is with deceit and lies.  Can Naomi finally make a break once and for all or is her life with Jesse now?

In all honesty, I did not like this book as well as the first one.  It is still a five star, of course.  I did not agree with the choices Naomi made throughout the book.  With all the therapy she has endured, she still makes so many wrong ones.  Choices that she knew were wrong because she is too scared to stand up for herself.  I would also have liked to have heard more about the other kidnappers.  We only hear about Jesse since he was paroled early.  Follow Naomi's story to the exciting conclusion.  A wonderful New Adult Series that will not disappoint you.

THE BREAKAWAY
 Rhemalda Publishing
 May 1st, 2012

When Naomi Jensen is kidnapped, it takes her parents two days to realize she’s missing. Escape isn’t high on her list of priorities when all she has to return to is an abusive boyfriend and parents who never paid much attention to her. For the first time in her life she’s part of a family—even if it is a family of criminals. But she’s still a captive. In a desperate attempt to regain some control in her life, Naomi embarks on a dangerous plan to make one of her kidnappers think she’s falling in love with him. The plan works too well, and when faced with the chance to escape, Naomi isn’t sure she wants to take it.

PURCHASE AT:     AMAZON     BARNES & NOBLE

MY REVIEW:
Naomi Jensen has it made.  Rich parents, a handsome boyfriend and freedom to do pretty much what she wants.  Looks can be deceiving.  Raised by nannies, all Naomi wants is someone to love her and pay attention to her.  When Naomi is kidnapped it takes her parents two days to even notice and then they go back to work the next day.  Naomi is not surprised.  Appearance and money have always been more important to her family.

Naomi starts to realize that maybe her kidnappers are not bad people after all.  In fact, they are much nicer than her boyfriend and pay more attention to her than her parents.  What does she have to go home to anyway?  When she starts getting close to one of her kidnappers, will she set him up for her escape or will she end up having real feelings for him?

This is a quick paced, nail-bitter that had me on edge until the end.  Naomi has the classic case of Stockholm Syndrome.  If she had a better home life she never would have bonded with her kidnappers as well as she did.  Even when she found out information about the brainwashing, she still dismissed it.  We still have to remember that no matter how much she came to care for her kidnappers they are still criminals and had no plans to ever  let her go.  This book was such an emotional journey for me.  I have feel in love with Michelle Davidson Argyle's books!  I recommend that you read this book.  You will not be disappointed.  Be sure to read the next book in this series, Pieces, to find out what happens to Naomi.

MEET THE AUTHOR:

She adores chocolate, sushi, and lots of ethnic food, and loves to read and write books in whatever time she can grab between her sword-wielding husband and energetic daughter. She believes a simple life is the best life.

EXCERPT:

“What is this? Why am I here?” I asked, still feeling like I was half asleep.

More footsteps entered the room. “I think she’s slept most of it off,” I heard Erik say to whoever walked in.

I felt Erik’s other hand on my arm and then felt a prick from a needle. Soon I could feel the grogginess go away and the strength in my muscles return. I opened my eyes and could see normally.

Erik was sitting at my side, still holding my hand. “Ready to get up now?” His smile was so warm and kind that the anger I had prepared to unleash on him was quickly disarmed.

Jack stood behind him, arms crossed, studying my every move.

“Amazing,” he said. “But I can’t quite understand it.”

Erik shot him a glance of annoyance.

“Um, yes. Well, let’s get started then, shall we?” Jack said, sitting on a chair at the end of my bed.
Erik sighed, disappointed in how the old man was handling things. He turned back to me. “I know it may not seem like it, but we’re actually trying to help you.”

I gave him the look that I had heard that line before.

“Sure. You don’t believe me,” he continued. “I wouldn’t believe me either. Someone drugs me and I wake up in some strange place, I’d be pretty pissed.” He flashed a slight smile.

“But here’s the deal. We have a lot of stuff to tell you. And we’d like you to tell us some stuff, too,” he paused, sensing my hesitation, “if, and only if, you want to. Okay?” He waited for me to shake my head yes.

“I’ll start with the basics.” Erik let go of my hand and sat in the chair next to my bed. “I don’t know if you noticed, but I’m a little like you.” I glanced over at him, unsure of what he was trying to tell me. “You see what I mean? Not everyone can do this.”

I looked at him confused. Not do what? I thought. This guy is cute but not at all good at explaining things in clear and simple terms.

“So you think I’m cute, huh?” I looked up to see him smiling. “And by the way, I think my explanation is very clear. You just need to pay attention.”

“I AM paying attention!” I said loudly. And then it hit me. My voice had filled what had been a silent room. Nobody had spoken for at least a minute. Erik hadn’t said anything. And yet we were having a conversation. A two-way conversation—without spoken words. He could read thoughts! That’s why he said we were alike.
